ratty little car update -- sqeeeeee...crunch
It dawned on me recently that I don't think I've ever had a brake job done on my ratty little gerbil car. Why is dawned on me is a couple of times during the last few times I've driven it I have heard this squeaking, grinding, crunching noise when I apply the brakes. Plus I've driven it 151,000 miles.
I think those are signs a brake job is in the not very distant future for the ratty little gerbil car.

Better get those brakes done soon and prepare yourself for the worst, like a big bill $$$. Sometimes with noise like that there could be some moderately bad damage, worse than just the relatively minor expense of new brake pads.
ewww~~bad news. the grinding you hear is the sound of your rotor being worn down to nothing. the bare brakes are etching grooves into your rotor. not only are rotors expensive, but any new pads you put on will be quickly worn down by the groovy rotor (excuse the pun...), and plus the pads won't grab the rotor to stop as efficiently as they should.
i'm not a mechanic or expert, but been there done that with brakes more than i care to want to say!! sometimes they can flip the rotor over to the smooth side, but sometimes not. if you can afford it, best get it done as soon as possible.
Oh I'm sure pretty much everything's going to have to be replaced. While that's a pain (all car repair -- even routine -- is a pain to me), that isn't as much of an issue as is that my brother says he can do it for me. Now I'm sure he can. And I'm sure he'd do a decent job of it, but christ, I just know he'd bitch about it the entire time and also that it would take at least three times as long to finish. I don't think I'm up for that crap, even if it would save me half or more.
...relatives with good intentions... Ugh.
